Timeline: Steve Jobs (1955-2011)



 February 24, 1955 -Steven Paul Jobs was born in America. Steve Jobs is adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs, who live in a humble home with room for two kids in the Sunset District of San Francisco.


1960 - The Jobs family moves to Palo Alto, heart of the growing Silicon Valley. The house had a garage, which Paul used to tinker with cars while Steve got interested in electronics.




1969 - Jobs meets Steve Wozniak at Homestead High School. The Jobs family moves to Los Altos. According to Michael Moritz’s Return to the Little Kingdom, they bought a house “with a gently raked roof, a large garage and three bedrooms” in Los Altos because Steve Jobs wanted to go to a better school, Homestead High School. There, he met Steve Wozniak; in 1975 the two Steves would assemble Apple I circuit boards in this same garage.




 1972 - Steve and Woz build and sell illegal blue boxes to Berkeley students.




1973 - Steve spends one semester at Reed College, where he crashes at friends’ dorm rooms and apartments. After dropping out, he keeps going to class, joins Atari, disappears from time to time to a hippie communal farm, and goes on a trip to India.




1974 - went to India Steve gets a job at Atari, and makes a trip to India to seek enlightenment. 





1975 - Steve and Woz start assembling Apple I computers in the Jobs' garage, and sell them to hobbyists. 




 1976 - Woz and Steve show the early Apple I board at the Homebrew Computer Club. 



 Apr 1, 1976 - Apple Computer Inc. is incorporated by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ron Wayne.



Aug 1976 - Steve Jobs and Woz show off the Apple I at the Personal Computing Festival.




 Jan 1977 - Mike Markkula invests in Apple and hires Mike Scott as CEO. Woz is forced to leave HP.



1977 - Photo shows Apple co-founder Steve Jobs as he introduces the new Apple II in Cupertino, Calif. 
  


 Apr 1977 - Apple makes a huge sensation at the West Coast Computer Faire with a prototype Apple II.



 1978 - The Apple II becomes the first mass-market personal computer, a huge hit all around the US.Steve Jobs' and his ex-girlfriend Chris-Ann Brennan's daugher Lisa is born out of wedlock.At Apple, work starts on Apple III and Lisa while Jef Raskin begins The Book of Macintosh.




 Nov 1979 - Steve Jobs is shown the first working graphical user interface at Xerox PARC.




 Dec 1979 - Steve Jobs is shown the first working graphical user interface at Xerox PARC.
Sales of Apple II skyrocket after Visicalc, the first spreadsheet, is introduced.




 May 1980 - Apple launches the Apple III, which will prove a disastrous flop.


  
  Dec 12, 1980 - Apple goes public, increasing Steve Jobs' net worth to over $200 million.

  

 Feb 25, 1981 - Black Wednesday: 50 Apple employees laid off by CEO Mike Scott, who leaves afterward.



 1981 - Jef Raskin is forced out of his Macintosh project as Steve Jobs takes over.




 Aug 12, 1981 - IBM launches the IBM PC, the biggest threat to Apple's future 



 Feb 1982 - Steve ends up on the cover of Time Magazine.




1982 - Steve buys an apartment in the top two floors of the San Remo, a Neo-Renaissance apartment building in New York City. He renovated his apartment for years with the help of famed architect I.M. Pei and sold it to U2’s singer Bono in 2003. He never even lived there.



 
 Jan 1983 - Launch of the Lisa computer. The Lisa team merges with the Mac team.




 Apr 8, 1983 - PepsiCo CEO John Sculley becomes Apple's CEO.


Jan 24, 1984 - Macintosh is launched in great fanfare at Apple’s annual shareholder meeting.

1984 • Jobs buys the Jackling House, a 14,540-square-foot, 14-bedroom manor designed by George Washington Smith and located in Woodside, California. He moves in with almost no furniture.

1984 - Steve Jobs, chairman of the board of Apple Computer, leans on the new "Macintosh" personal computer following a shareholder's meeting in Cupertino, Calif.




May 1985 - Palace coup: Apple's board sides with John Sculley and strips Steve off all executive duties.



Jul 1985 - Alan Kay first introduces the Pixar team to Steve Jobs.

  


 Sep 17, 1985 - Steve Jobs resigns from Apple. Apple announces it will sue Steve's future company, NeXT. 



 Jan 30, 1986 - Jobs buys a division of George Lucas' ILM for $10 million and incorporates it as Pixar.



Aug 1986 - Pixar unveils John Lasseter’s short film Luxo Jr. at SIGGRAPH. 



 Feb 1987 - Ross Perot invests $20 million in NeXT, valuing it at $125 million.



 Jan 1988 - Pixar launches the Pixar Image Computer II and starts working on the RenderMan language.

 Sep 1988 - NeXT and IBM form a partnership to have NeXT’s system run on IBM machines.



 Oct 12, 1988 - Steve Jobs introduces the NeXT Cube in San Francisco.

Dec 1988 - At SIGGRAPH, Pixar releases Tin Toy (1988's Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film).




 Mar 1989 - NeXT partners with distribution network Businessland to sell to corporate America.



  Jun 1989 - Canon invests $100 million in NeXT, now worth $600 million. 



 Apr 30, 1990 - Steve shuts down all of Pixar’s hardware operations.




Sep 13, 1990 - Steve Jobs, president and CEO of NeXT Computer Inc., shows off his company's new NeXTstation after an introduction to the public in San Francisco.




Mar 1, 1991 - Steve Jobs fires almost half of Pixar’s staff and takes back all of the employees’ stock.


  
 Mar 18, 1991 - Steve Jobs marries Laurene Powell 



 May 1991 - Pixar signs a deal with Disney to make a computer-animated feature film.



 Oct 1991 - Perot Leaves NeXT 



  Jan 1992 - NeXT licenses its operating system, NeXTSTEP. NeXT COO Peter Van Cuylenburg betrays Steve Jobs by trying to have the company bought by Sun 




  Mar 18, 1992 - First Son, Reed Paul


Feb 11, 1993 - NeXT fires 300 employees as it discontinues hardware and becomes NeXT Software Inc.


 Nov 1993 - Jeffrey Katzenberg puts a halt to the development of Toy Story
 Nov 1994 -Pixar resumes work on Toy Story.




 Feb 1995 - Steve becomes President & CEO of Pixar Animation Studios.




 Nov 29, 1995 -One week after Toy Story is out, Pixar goes public. Steve Jobs worth $1.5 billion.



1996 - Steve Jobs negotiaties a breakthrough deal between Pixar and Disney with Michael Eisner. 



1991 • Jobs marries Laurene Powell and moves out of the cooper manor, to a new home on Waverley Street, in Palo Alto, California. This charming, rustic brick house, with big trees and a luscious garden where Jobs cultivates his own vegetables, is his current residence.




 
Dec 1996 - Apple buys NeXT for $400 million. Steve Jobs is named "informal adviser" to CEO Gil Amelio. 



 Jul 1997 - Gil Amelio is ousted by the Apple Board. Steve Jobs is named interim CEO. 



1997 - Steve Jobs, chief executive of Pixar, speaks at the MacWorld trade show in San Francisco.



Aug 6, 1997 - Steve Jobs introduces Apple's new Board and a peace treaty with Microsoft at Macworld.



Jan 8, 1998 - Apple is profitable again.





May 6, 1998- Steve Jobs of Apple Computers unveils the the new iMac computer in Cupertino, Calif.



Jan 5, 1999 - Steve Jobs introduces the new Power Mac G3 and the color iMacs at Macworld San Francisco.



 Jul 21, 1999 - The original iBook is unveiled at Macworld New York with the tagline "iMac to go". 



 Oct 5, 1999 - Introduction of iMovie, Apple's first Digital Hub app. 




Jan 5, 2000 - Steve Jobs officially becomes Apple’s CEO and demoes Mac OS X at Macworld.



 Jul 19, 2000 - The Power Mac G4 Cube is unveiled at Macworld NY. It will be discontinued one year later. 



 Jan 9, 2001- Steve Jobs unveils Apple’s Digital Hub Strategy at Macworld.


 Mar 24, 2001- Mac OS X 10.0 ships. 



May 19, 2001 - Apple opens its first Retail Stores in Tysons Corner, Virginia and Glendale, California.


 Oct 23, 2001 - Steve Jobs unveils the first iPod.


Jan 7, 2002 - Steve unveils the iMac G4 and the fourth iApp, iPhoto, at Macworld San Francisco.


Jul 17, 2002 - Steve Jobs introduces the first Windows-compatible iPods at Macworld NY.




Apr 28, 2003 - Apple opens the online iTunes Music Store in the US. 





May 30, 2003 - Opening day of Finding Nemo, Pixar’s first Best Animated Feature Academy Award winner. 



Jun 23, 2003 - Steve Jobs unveils the Power Mac G5, the world’s fastest computer, at WWDC. 



Oct 2003 - Steve Jobs is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. 



Oct 16, 2003 - "The day hell froze over": Steve Jobs introduces iTunes for Windows. 


  2003 - Steve Jobs is diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer and begins showing signs of weight loss. He is shown in this combination photo of file photographs dating (top row L to R) July 2000, November 2003, September 2005, (bottom L to R) September 2006, January 2007 and September 2008. Jobs will take a medical leave of absence until the end of June because his health problems are "more complex" than he had thought, shocking investors and sending the company's shares down as much as 10 percent on January 14, 2009.  




Jan 6, 2004 - Steve unveils the iPod mini and the iLife suite at Macworld. 

2004 - Apple CEO Steve Jobs displays the iPod mini at the Macworld Conference and Expo in San Francisco. Jobs, the Apple founder and former CEO who invented and masterfully marketed ever-sleeker gadgets that transformed everyday technology, from the personal computer to the iPod and iPhone, died Wednesday. He was 56.





Aug 2004 - Steve Jobs has his pancreatic tumor removed by surgery.

  




Jan 11, 2005 - At Macworld San Francisco, Steve Jobs unveils iWork, the Mac mini, and the iPod shuffle.



Apr 29, 2005 - Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is released. It marks the end of the transition from the Mac OS to OS X.




Jun 6, 2005 - Steve Jobs announces that Apple is going to use Intel processors in the future Macs at WWDC.

Aug 7, 2006 - Apple completes the transition of its entire product line to the Intel platform with Mac Pro.








 Jan 9, 2007 - Steve Jobs introduces Apple TV and iPhone at Macworld. Apple Computer becomes Apple

Jun 29, 2007 - iPhone is released in the US, the same day as Pixar’s Ratatouille.


 Dec 6, 2007 - Steve Jobs is inducted in the California Hall of Fame by Gov. Schwartzenegger.




 Jan 15, 2008 - Steve Jobs introduces the world’s thinnest notebook, the MacBook Air, at Macworld.

Apr 2009 - Steve has surgery for a liver transplant.

Aug 28, 2009 - Apple releases Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, stripped off any code from the original Mac OS.


 Sep 9, 2009 - Steve Jobs makes his first public appearance of the year at an Apple Music Event.







Jan 27, 2010 - Steve Jobs unveils iPad, the much-anticipated Apple tablet.


Nov 2010 - The Beatles' 13 albums become available on iTunes, ending years of talks between Jobs, Beatles' management company Apple Corps and Beatles label EMI Group.

 Oct 5, 2011 - Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs died at age 56 from pancreatic cancer, the company announced Thursday, leaving the technology giant without its visionary. As Patricia Sullivan reported :

Steve Jobs, a co-founder of Apple Inc., who introduced simple, well-designed computers for people who were more interested in what technology could do than in how it was done, died Wednesday at age 56.
